Journal AWWA – Optimized Coagulation Assessment for a Highly Organic Surface Water Supply
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 10/01/2003

Document Format: PDF

Description

Enhanced coagulation has been identified as a treatmenttechnique for improving total organic carbon(TOC) removal at conventional surface watertreatment facilities. The authors conducted this studyto evaluate site-specific strategies for optimized TOCremoval, taking into account the many other treatmentobjectives affected by changing coagulant types anddosages. The authors found that four coagulants commonlyused in conventional treatment processes successfullymet minimum regulated disinfection byproduct(DBP) precursor control. Coagulant selection, however, was based on other interrelated factors includingchemical cost or other secondary water quality treatmentgoals.Utility directors evaluating long-term DBP controlusing coagulation will benefit from the comparativecoagulant cost and performance data presented. Thiswork illustrates that low-cost jar-testing techniques canbe useful in evaluating treatability costs and performancerelative to optimized coagulation. Includes 16 references, tables, figures.
