Remote Monitoring and Operation of Isolated Facilities in Cold Regions
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/01/2001

Document Format: PDF

Description

Many small communities in cold regions are isolated which presents unique problems in operation and maintenance of water treatment and supply systems. As a result of this isolation many communities face significant challenges related to available manpower and technical expertise required to operate and maintain water treatment systems. Regular access to facilities may also be difficult during winter conditions and because facilities are long distances apart. With advances in online monitoring equipment and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and communication systems it is now possible to monitor and even operate these small systems remotely. This technology is expected to have a significant impact in improving drinking water quality in many of these small communities. This paper describes the benefits and challenges of remote monitoring and operation of small isolated communities. Includes 5 references, figures.
