Control of MIB and Geosmin by Granular Activated Carbon
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

The granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption of methyl-isoborneol (MIB) and geosmin wasevaluated using the rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) and equilibrium isotherms.Increasing GAC age and influent total organic carbon (TOC) concentration negatively impactedthe GAC adsorption capacity. Influent disinfection byproducts and residual chlorine were foundto have no and little measurable impact, respectively. When normalized to bed volumes, theimpact of empty bed contact time was only a concern at short times. When expressed asfractional or normalized effluent concentration, the impact of different influent MIBconcentrations was not found. Includes 2 references, tables, figures.
