This slide presentation outlines a case study for the Village of Manteno, Illinois on using ultraviolet (UV) disinfection for groundwater supplies. Initial outcomes included:groundwater under the direct influence ofsurface water, enhanced treatment byincreasing chlorine residual andcontact time (CT), several drawbacks;needed a different solution to get allwells online without another boil order. The solution involved:add UV disinfection ahead of chlorination; most economical option, quick installation;and, goals were toprovide second barrier to pathogens,minimize required chlorine contact time, andeliminate aesthetic issues. Topics outlined include: permitting and UV disinfection process; water quality requirements; validation program; implementation; installation requirements; and, well construction.
