Description
This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of nitrate-contaminated groundwater, and the City of Glendale’s water system, and the advantages and challenges of biological treatment. Project objectives were to:characterize the performance of biological nitrateremoval technologies;identify co-contaminant treatment;evaluate ongoing ion-exchange pilot performancebased on same criteria; identify environmental issues for each technology;develop cost comparison; and, evaluate biological and ion-exchange systems basedon criteria including the triple bottom line (TBL) ofsustainability. Topics presented include: water quality characterization; pilot processes; Train 1 – MBfR; Train 2 – Upflow Bioreactor withPlastic Media; Train 3 – Upflow GAC Bioreactor; Post Filtration (Biologically ActiveCarbon); Denitrification Water QualityObjectives; Train 1 – MBfR DenitrificationPerformance; Train 2 (Plastic Media)Denitrification Performance; Train 3 (GAC Bioreactor)Denitrification Performance; Post-Treatment Performance; and, study conclusions.
