Description
Seventeen aquatic humic substances were ozonated under batch conditions (DOC= 2.75 plus or minus .25 mg/L, ozone dose = 6 mg/L, pH = 7.5) to determine ozone decomposition rate constants. Highly aromatic humic substances exert larger ozone demands than less aromatic humic substances. Specific UV absorbance at 254 nm or 280 nm correlates well with ozone decomposition rates. As a representative surrogate for biodegradability, aldehyde concentrations do not vary dramatically after ozonation of different humic substances. Bromate, an inorganic by-product, does vary as a function of the presence of different humic substances.
