Control and Monitoring Options for Small Systems
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper relates four main control options for use in small systems: discrete sensors (can be pressure switches, level probes or similar devices) with relay/timer logic; analog sensors (pressure, level transducers with a continuously variable output) with current trips, thumbwheels, etc.; analog sensors with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or dedicated controllers; and computer-based SCADA. According to the author, all of the control capabilities available to large systems can be used in a small system. Whether or not a particular control scheme will be successful in a small system depends on a number of things, including: user comfort level; serviceability; communications; flexibility; ease of use; and overall system cost.
