Bio-Remediation of an Industrialised River to Aid Treatment for Potable Use
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1999

Document Format: PDF

Description

An experimental bioremediation system was installed in a series of lakes containing potentially eutrophic water. The system consisted of a single floating reed bed (750 m2) and a number of semi-buoyant units containing decomposing barley straw (ca.5 g/m3) which was deployed in two bankside storage lakes. The in-lake bioremedial systems were shown to significantly reduce the biological productivity of the eutrophic river source flowing from the upstream reference lake. The reduction in the phytoplankton or “biolobical load” of the raw water will facilitate cost effective treatment through a conventional treatment plant.
