The Cleveland Division of Water (CWD) has been using geographic information systems (GIS) in various ways for about 2 decades.CWD’s involvement with GIS over the last twenty years can be split up into eras.These eras can be defined by 2 major projects: the “mini-GIS Hydraulic Model”; and, “City-Wide or Enterprise GIS”.The actual eras could then be defined as:pre – “mini-GIS Hydraulic Model”; “mini-GIS Hydraulic Model”; City-Wide GIS; and,post City-Wide GIS. The intent of this paper was to give an overview of CWD’s GIS experience and lend ourlessons learned through this experience to aid others in properly planning andimplementing GIS solutions for water systems.
