Small Public Water Supply Applications for Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Technology
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1999

Document Format: PDF

Description

Variable frequency drive (VFD) technology has been available for motor driveapplications for many years. In the water works industry, one primary applicationof this technology is the maintenance of pressures within a water distributionsystem over a wide range of flows. VFDs may also be utilized to limit hydraulicsurges, dampen the effects of varying suction pressure, accommodate widelyvarying demands on the discharge side of a pump station, as well as pace chemicalfeed equipment for accurate chemical feed dosages over a wide range of flows. Theprimary goal of this paper is to provide water system managers, operators, andengineers, with a straightforward summary overview of present day, in place, workable, motor control technologies. The paper reveiws some successful workingapplications associated with the pumping of water in the context of improvedwater works system control. Proper pump control technology is applicable to allliquid pumping applications. In the water works industry, this may includeinstallations associated with source of supply, water treatment, high servicepumping, and re-pumping through water booster stations. It should also be notedthat this technology is by no means restricted to large water systems. There arenumerous VFD applications used in small public and/or community water systems. Includes figure.
