This article demonstrates the scope and limitations of laboratory batch experiments when applied to the design of rapid mixing and flocculation systems. A suitable batch reactor is described, along with appropriate methodology and interpretation of results for design in terms of rapid mixing velocity gradient and time, flocculation intensity, profile, and duration.
