Document Format: PDF

Description

An established method for directly determining thekinetics of chlorine decay attributable to pipe-wall reactionsdoes not currently exist. Wide variability in wallreaction parameters, attributable to varying characteristicsof a pipe such as age, material, and diameter, also makethe task of estimating these parameters tedious at best.An inverse model that accurately estimates waterquality reaction parameters is developed. The parameterestimation problem is formulated as an unconstrainedoptimization problem, for which an inverse modelingapproach using a water quality simulation model and astochastic search genetic algorithm (GA) as routines inthe computational procedure is adopted.Calibrating a water distribution model usingGA, which attempts to find the best solution bymimicking the natural selection process in genetics, can automate and simplify the process for anyapplicable reaction kinetics. In addition, a GA-basedwater quality calibrator is applicable tomany unknown individual, global, or grouped reactionparameters.Applying the inverse model to two real-life networksdemonstrated the model’s ability to compute the varioustypes of unknown reaction parameters. GA wasfound to be the most appropriate method to use with alarge number of parameters. Includes 22 references, tables, figures.
