Journal AWWA – MIEX for Removal of DBP Precursors: Pilot-plant Findings
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 04/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

Pilot-plant studies were conducted on four rawwaters of varying quality from geographic locationsacross the United States to investigate the effectivenessof the magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) process forremoval of disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursorssuch as dissolved organic carbon and bromide. Anionexchange was shown to be a useful process for removingnatural organic material (NOM) from raw drinkingwater. Results indicated that DBP formation was loweredappreciably; the extent of the reduction was afunction of the properties of the NOM and the inorganiccomposition of the raw water. The innovative aspect of the MIEX process is that itis used at the head of a treatment plant, before coagulation.Water utility managers can use the informationprovided here to evaluate the suitability of this processto meet their individual treatment needs and the compositionof their source waters. Includes 33 references, tables, figures.
