Algal Toxin Removal by High Pressure Membranes – An AWWARF Tailored Collaboration Study (Preliminary Findings)
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 03/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

In this study rapid bench-scale membrane tests (RBSMT), conducted using protocols published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) inthe Information Collection Rule (ICR), were performed to evaluate microcystin-LR (m-LR) algaltoxin removal by high pressure membranes. Testing was limited to thin film compositepolyamide nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes due to the relatively lowmolecular mass of the m-LR algal toxin (< 1100 Daltons). Water mass transfer coefficients(MTC) (aka specific fluxes) for the selected NF and RO membranes ranged from 0.1 to 0.4gfd/psi and from 0.3 to 0.8 gfd/psi, respectively. The paper summarizes the characteristics of the flat sheet membranes utilized in this study. Thesemembranes represent currently utilized membranes for drinking water applications. They wereselected to provide a wide range of membrane types to evaluate treatment of m-LR. Lowfouling RO membranes were specifically included in the testing based on their superiorperformance in treating high organic, moderately brackish surface water supplies in Florida. Includes tables, figures.
