Comparison of Electrocoagulation and Chemical Coagulation for Microfiltration Pretreatment of Natural Water
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 03/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

The objectives of this research are to compare chemical and electrocoagulationpretreatment options for microfiltration in terms of: reduction in microfilter fouling;enhancements in micro-filtered water quality (in terms of natural organic matter and disinfectionbyproduct precursors); and, reduction in nanofiltration (NF) membrane fouling in case ofintegrated membrane systems. The combination of coagulation and microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) has beensuggested as an effective means to maintain high permeate flux, reduce microfilter fouling, andprovide high quality product water. Conducting chemical coagulation (CC) with aluminumor iron salts is a common pretreatment option; however, electrocoagulation (EC) is anotheremerging technology. The advantages of electrocoagulation over chemical coagulationinclude: no alkalinity consumption; no change in pH; eliminates the need to store andfeed highly corrosive chemicals; produces lesser sludge; and, can be easily scaled forportable water treatment units especially during use in emergency situations. Therefore, a studywas undertaken to explore the option of coupling electrocoagulation as a pretreatment processfor surface water microfiltration. Includes 4 references.
