Pilot Study Report: Mixed-Oxidant Disinfection System at Greenfield, Iowa
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1997

Document Format: PDF

Description

Greenfield, Iowa, is a small community utilizing surface water supplemented with well water during high demand months. Total production is approximately 0.5 million gallons per day. Source water quality and system dynamics have led to a variety of treated water problems that have caused the utility to investigate various disinfectants in combination with treatment processes. The utility has tried ozone and was using gas chlorine prior to switching to on-site generated mixed oxidants in the summer of 1996. This paper describes the mixed oxidant disinfection technology being used in Greenfield and discusses the system performance results. Mixed oxidants have demonstrated significant operational safety advantages as well as disinfection byproduct reduction, residual maintenance and taste and odor improvements in the distribution system. Used in pretreatment, mixed oxidants have improved the removal of manganese and caused a microflocculation effect similar to that of ozone during the winter months, but were not effective in the summer due to variations in water quality.
