Disinfection By-Product Formation Potential and Source Water Quality
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1997

Document Format: PDF

Description

Proposed drinking water regulations for disinfectants and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) will focus on the removal of DBP precursors to control finished water DBP levels. Ideally, water suppliers would like to rate and track the disinfection byproduct formation potential (DBPFP) of their source water. It would be particularly convenient to be able to obtain the DBPFP from an easily determined surrogate parameter such as total organic carbon (TOC) or specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA254). While a number of investigators have attempted to describe a suitable surrogate for DBPFP and/or for DBPs themselves, none has proved applicable for all types of waters and treatment schemes. This paper describes a useful DBPFP protocol that provides information that can approximate realistic treatment conditions and that is also sufficiently consistent to compare DBPFP for diverse sources.
