A New Tool to Evaluate the Impacts of Treatment Modifications on Regrowth Potential in Distribution Systems
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1997

Document Format: PDF

Description

To effectively address issues related to biodegradable organic matter (BOM), utilities need to be able to measure biodegradable organic carbon (BDOC) concentrations and then relate these values to regrowth potential in their distribution systems. This paper presents a novel approach to predicting regrowth potential. The objective of this effort is not to provide a detailed prediction of regrowth in a complex system, but rather to produce a ranking of the regrowth potential of various treatment scenarios. The procedure is based on the coupling of the HSB model and the SANCHO model. Rather than identifying each of the biodegradable carbon compounds (BOCs) present, an indirect method of bacterial growth is used to establish the type of BOC present. From this data, BDOC is partitioned into three classes of biodegradability.
