Description
Relatively low levels of perchlorate (5 to 10 ug/L) are currently being measured in the untreated Colorado River water (CRW) entering the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s (MWDSC’s) system. MWDSC initiated a series of pilot-scale studies to investigate treatment options for perchlorate removal. Enhanced coagulation, oxidation with ozone and PEROXONE (ozone combined with hydrogen peroxide), oxidation followed by granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment, and membrane processes were evaluated for their ability to remove perchlorate. Preliminary results indicated that nanofiltration and reverse-osmosis membranes consistently removed greater than 80 percent of the applied perchlorate. Neither oxidation, oxidation followed by GAC adsorption, nor enhanced coagulation appeared promising in the treatment of perchlorate in drinking water.
