Description
This paper summarizes Chapter 13 “Integrated Resource Planning” in the new second edition ofAWWA manual M50. Integrated Resource Planning or IRP is viewed as a process to tie all ofthe individual elements of water resources planning together. A model IRP process is describedto provide a structure for preparing an integrated resource plan. The major differences betweenconventional water resource planning and IRP include giving equal consideration to demandmanagement and new supply development, consideration of risk and reliability with shortagemanagement as an option, extensive public participation in the process. Selection of anintegrated resource plan should consider cost-effectiveness, supply reliability, environmentalimpacts, financing, and public acceptability. Includes 5 references, tables, figure.
