Validation of a Modified Jar Test Procedure to Scale Down Microsand Weighted Flocculation
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1999

Document Format: PDF

Description

The objective of this study was to simulate the industrial ballasted flocculation process in the laboratory, with a view to substantially reducing installation and optimization costs in a full-scale plant. The conventional jar test methodology was modified to accommodate the addition of micro-sand and polymer. This new procedure was then used to investigate the relative importance of a number of control parameters or treatment variables (coagulant and polymer dosages, coagulation pH, micro-sand dosage, contact times and temperature) on process performances. The following research objectives were followed throughout the research program: assess and validate the capacity of modified jar test procedures to simulate large-scale applications by comparing the quality of the settled water at the two treatment scales; investigate the factors affecting ballasted flocculation and identify key parameters defining the quality of the settled water; and, study the effect of the dosages of polymer and micro-sand on the performances of ballasted flocculation. Includes 12 references, tables, figures.
