The paper discusses the elements of aprogram for providing a routine health check on filters, with emphasis on the analyticalchemical and physical testing that can and should be conducted to detect early “health”problems and maintain filters in top physical condition. This paper is based on information collected from over three dozen water utilities in the UnitedStates, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia, the published literature and the experience ofthe authors and their associates, and included in the recently published AwwaRF “FilterMaintenance and Operations Guidance Manual”. This program usually requires aninspection team with a combination of technical skills to perform all of the sample collection andtesting, including plant operations, maintenance and laboratory personnel.
