Description
This paper presents a bench-scale study that investigated the potential for humic matter to coat the surface ofbacteria (E. coli and B. subtilis) and consequently offer protection from low-pressure ultraviolet (UV)light. A factorial experiment was completed in which two bacteria (E. coli and B. subtiliscells) and two types of humic matter (Aldrich® humic acid (AHA) and Suwannee Rivernatural organic matter (Suwannee River NOM)) were exposed to UV light (5 and 14mJ/cm2). The UV light was delivered using a collimated beam apparatus at fourconcentrations of humic matter (0, 10, 50, 120 mg/L) in regent grade water. This studyfollows a recently published paper in which apparent surface-coating of MS2 and T4viruses and subsequent protection from UV disinfection was observed (Templeton et al.,in press).
