EPS Modeling for Evaluating Distribution System Water Quality – a Dallas Water Utilities Case Study
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

This slide presentation outlines a case study with the Dallas, Texas, Water Utilities that involved EPS modeling for evaluating distribution system water quality. The outline of the problem definition includes: specific water quality event in Summer 2004;colored water complaints;low chlorine residual; and, evaluate if process changes were having impactin mixing zones. Observations included:no clear relationship between mixing zones andunresolved colored water complaints;a prevalence of unlined pipe exists in the vicinityof the unresolved color complaint locations;it is likely that modified distribution system waterchemistry between Bachman and EastsideWTPs precipitated iron out of unlined pipes; and, reversed flow direction when Bachman wasplaced back on line may have precipitated iron. Recommendations included:maintain consistent and compatible waterchemistry in the distribution system;evaluate source water quality;evaluate treatment processes; and, further evaluation of distribution systemfactors contributing to water quality stability. Includes tables, figures.
