Mechanical and Chemical Stabilities of Polymeric Membranes
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

The purpose of this paper is to present basic principles of mechanical and chemicalstabilities of polymers, factors contributing to high mechanical and chemical stabilities. Moreover, the paper presents the experimental approaches to assess the mechanical andchemical stabilities based on the understanding of the principles governing the stabilities. This paper discusses many factors contributing to the mechanical and chemical stability of polymericmembranes, including:chemical composition, including structure of monomers and the ways by which themonomers make up the chains;molecular architecture, referring molecular structure “at large”, including averagemolecular weight (AMW) and its distribution, branching, crosslinking, etc.;chain orientation with respect to the direction of major stress;morphology of polymers: crystalline vs. amorphous polymers;structure and geometry of membranes; the pattern and intensity of hydraulic and chemical cleaning schemes; and,the presence of catalysts and inhibitors for chemical reactions relevant to chemicaldegradation of polymeric membranes. Includes 12 references, table, figures.
