Performance Evaluation of Zero-Valent Iron Hybrid Systems for Nitrate Removal from Aqueous Solution
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2009

Document Format: PDF

Description

A laboratory scale batch process was conducted to investigate the feasibility of ahybrid system of zero-valent iron (Fe0) with three different adsorbents for the removal ofnitrate (NO3-) and ammonium ions (NH4+) from aqueous solution. The maximum nitrateremoval was observed for Fe0-sepiolite hybrid system at 45ºC for 24 h reaction time. The rate of NO3- removal increased with the increase in initial NO3- concentration. NH4+ ions producedduring the denitrification process by Fe0 were successfully removed by the adsorbents, withthe removal efficiency in the order of GAC > sepiolite > filtralite. Results of the present studysuggest that the use of hybrid systems could be a promising innovative technology forachieving simultaneous removal of NO3- and NH4+ from aqueous solution.
